For some reason I have a very clear memory of Chris driving us somewhere or another and Big Country was playing – it was often that! Chris would ratchet the sound up LOUD. Jo, you’d half heartedly say ‘oh daaaaad!’ and I’d utterly love it 😊. As a kid Chris just inspired me – he was larger than life, full of humour, full of energy and wonderfully rebellious in terms of being a ‘normal’ dad. I was delighted every time I came round to be greeted with a booming ‘hello Megs!’. And then there were all those key occasions in my life where Chris and Shelia were always there – always quietly working hard in the background to make it a success – the sixth form ball, my wedding….So generous and always just seeming to know what would make it all work well. Chris even helped me to find one of my first jobs…in his department at the county council!! Probably the earliest example (and one of the very few) I experienced of working for a wonderful leader. Most recently it is the memory of Chris with his grandchildren that sticks with me. The way he’d turn up at whatever hour to watch them play sport and just the simple way he was there, loving and attending. I know how much you will all miss him. And how wonderfully, wonderfully fortunate we all are having known him.
